Shabbat is here and it starts with one of the strongest symbols of the Jewish people: lighting the Shabbat candles. The ritual of candle lighting encompasses what is most central in Judaism – the Jewish home.

L’Dor V’Dor, from generation to generation, one may remember one’s own mother lighting… or one’s grandmother… or the Jewish women who have been lighting candles every Friday night for over 4,000 years. It is the ultimate link connecting Jewish women throughout the ages.

Household customs vary, but traditionally we usher in Shabbat with at least two candles. Many families add one candle for each child, as each child is an additional blessing and a source of new light coming into the world.
